Accelerated Placement Process
-
Naperville Community Unit School District 203 has established procedures to allow for requests from parents/guardians and/or teachers for subject-specific or whole-grade acceleration for students currently enrolled and attending a District 203 school.
Due to the integrated nature of the elementary school classroom, single-subject acceleration is not recommended. However, parents/guardians should contact building administration to discuss academic needs within a single subject.
The process outlined below is intended specifically for children who demonstrate strong readiness for whole-grade acceleration or for subject-specific acceleration in math. Students who are not currently enrolled in Honors Math (HM), Project IDEA (PI), and/or Project IDEA Plus (PI+) may engage in the process for identification and placement process for these services, which begin as early as Grade 3. Please see information about Academically Talented Services at www.naperville203.org/academicallytalented.
Whole Grade Acceleration for Kindergarten - Grade 7- Parents/guardians should have a conversation with the child’s teacher(s) and school administration/junior high school counselor regarding their desire for whole-grade acceleration (i.e., grade skipping) prior to completing and submitting the Request for Acceleration. All requests for whole-grade acceleration must be received no later than May 1 of the school year prior to when acceleration is desired.
- The request for whole-grade acceleration will be reviewed and a confirmation phone call or email will be sent to the parents/guardians of the child with information about next steps.
- If warranted, data collection/assessments will begin. Upon completion of the data collection, parents/guardians will be notified of the results of the testing and the recommended placement. Placement decisions involve academic and social and emotional considerations. These qualities of student development are taken into consideration at an individual student level. All decisions regarding placement will be made in a timely fashion and will be final for one school year.
- New students will be enrolled based on the last grade-level completed. The acceleration assessment process for new students will not take place until the next school year begins.
Subject-Specific Acceleration in Math for Students Currently In Grade 5 - Grade 7
- Parents/guardians should have a conversation with the child’s teacher(s) and school administration/junior high school counselor regarding their desire for subject-specific acceleration in math prior to completing and submitting the Request for Acceleration. Students must already be enrolled in HM or PI+. All requests for subject-specific acceleration in math must be received no later than May 1 of the school year prior to when acceleration is desired.
