Inclement Weather and School Procedures
-
Weather in the Chicagoland area can be unpredictable throughout the year, with conditions ranging from snowstorms to severe thunderstorms and extreme heat. We want to assure you that the safety of our students and staff is always our top priority, and we take careful steps to address any weather-related challenges.
Our Goal: Safe In-Person Learning
As a public school district, our primary goal is to keep buildings open for in-person learning whenever it is safe to do so. On rare occasions, weather conditions or other safety-related concerns may require us to close schools or pivot to eLearning. How Weather-Related Decisions Are Made
Decisions regarding schedule changes or closures are made based on the best information available at the time. Here are some factors we consider:- The ability to safely transport students and staff to and from school.
- Weather forecasts, including snow, wind chill, thunderstorms, high winds, flooding, and extreme heat.
- Regular updates from our Buildings and Grounds team, local municipalities, area school districts, National Weather Service, and transportation providers.
Our team meets regularly to monitor weather conditions and evaluate any potential impact on school operations. These decisions are not taken lightly, as we understand the importance of in-person learning for our students and families.
Communication Regarding Potential Schedule Changes
Families should always plan for schools to be open unless they receive an official notification from the District. In the event of a schedule change or closure:- Notifications will be sent via phone, email, and text message.
- Updates will also be posted on our website, social media, and the Emergency Closing Center (www.emergencyclosingcenter.com).
- Decisions will be communicated as early as possible, typically no later than 6:00 AM.
If no communication is received, families can assume school will be in session as scheduled.
eLearning Days
When in-person learning is not possible, we may transition to an eLearning Day to ensure continuity of education. eLearning Days do not require make-up days at the end of the school year. Please remind students to bring their devices home daily in preparation for this possibility. Additional details about eLearning will be shared by the District and your child’s school as needed.Preparing for All Weather Conditions
From snowstorms to summer storms, we encourage families to stay prepared and flexible. Dress students appropriately for the weather, plan safe travel routes, and remain informed through our communication channels.Thank you for your understanding and partnership as we navigate weather-related challenges together. Your support ensures that we can continue to prioritize the safety and education of our students and staff.
