  • Assistant Principal Leave of Absence

    Posted by Malee Farmer on 8/21/2019

    Dear Jefferson Families,

    It has been great meeting new students and seeing familiar faces returning to the building. The staff is invigorated for a new school year. I wanted to share that I am expecting the arrival of my third baby any day now. I will be taking a leave of absence for three months and anticipate returning on November 18th. The district is providing great support with a substitute during that time. Christine Ernst is an experienced administrator with a wealth of knowledge. She has had positions ranging from Dean, Assistant Principal, Principal, and Assistant Superintendent. Jefferson is lucky to have her. You may reach her at, and my phone line will be forwarded to her while I am out. Jefferson will be in good hands until I return.

    My family appreciates being a part of the Jefferson community. We are grateful for everyone coming together so that we can take the time to welcome our new son.

    Thank you,
    Malee Farmer
    Assistant Principal

    I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. As Malee had mentioned, my name is Christine, (Christy) Ernst, and I will be taking over Malee’s responsibilities as assistant principal here at Jefferson until her return later in the fall. I am very excited to become a part of the Jefferson community, and will do my very best to work to create a smooth transition during her absence. I look forward to supporting the students, parents and staff of Jefferson Junior High.

    Christy Ernst

  • Signs of Suicide Implementation

    Posted by Malee Farmer on 8/21/2019

    Dear Parent or Guardian:

    As we continue our efforts to proactively support our students’ social-emotional health, D203 has partnered with Elyssa’s mission, a nonprofit organization dedicated to suicide prevention, to implement the Signs of Suicide (SOS) Program in grades 6-12. SOS is an evidence-based program that incorporates two key suicide prevention strategies: a curriculum that raises awareness of suicide and mental health issues and a brief screening for depression and other risk factors associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

    The program is designed to:

    • Increase knowledge and awareness about depression;
    • Encourage students to seek help for themselves or on behalf of a friend;
    • Reduce stigma around mental illness; and
    • Engage parents and school staff as partners in suicide prevention.

    The program will be presented on August 27, October 23, and November 18 to each grade 6th-8th respectively.

    The program will be facilitated by the social workers and counselors who will engage students by showing the SOS video and leading students in a discussion about how to implement the key message of Acknowledge, Care, and Tell) (ACT). Following the discussion, students will complete a brief depression screener, as well as a response card which allows them to indicate if they would like to speak to an adult about themselves or a friend.

    The depression screener addresses thoughts and feelings a student may be experiencing that may not be evident to parents or teachers. The screener does not provide a diagnosis of depression, but rather alerts school staff to students who need further investigation. Student services staff (social workers, school psychologist, or counselor) or a qualified community mental health partner will meet with any students whose screener indicate a need. Parents/guardians will be notified if their student is seen, and provided with any necessary steps, which may include a referral to a community provider, the development of a school support plan, and/or the development of a progress monitoring plan with student services staff.

    Additional information on Elyssa’s Mission, The Signs of Suicide program and Suicide Prevention can be found by visiting Be sure to visit the parent page where you will find a video that outlines the warning signs of suicide and how to keep your student safe.

    If you have any questions and/or do NOT want your child to participate in the SOS program, please contact Heather Kocisko, Social Worker, 630-848-3924, prior to the program date. If we do not hear from you, we will assume your student has permission to participate in this program.

    Malee A. Farmer
    Assistant Principal

    Estimado padre o tutor:

    A medida que continuamos nuestros esfuerzos para apoyar proactivamente la salud social y emocional de nuestros alumnos, el Distrito 203 se ha asociado con la misión de Elyssa, una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a la prevención del suicidio, para implementar el programa señales de suicidio - Signs of Suicide (SOS) en los grados 6-12. SOS es un programa basado en hechos que incorpora dos estrategias clave de prevención del suicidio: un programa de estudios que aumenta el conocimiento sobre el suicidio y problemas de salud mental y una breve evaluación de la depresión y otros factores de riesgo asociados con pensamientos y comportamientos suicidas.

    El programa está diseñado para:
    • Aumentar el conocimiento y sensibilización sobre la depresión;
    • Animar a los alumnos a buscar ayuda para si mismos o para un amigo;
    • Reducir el estigma que tienen las enfermedades mentales; e
    • Involucra a los padres y personal de la escuela como socios en la prevención del suicidio.

    El programa se presentará el 27 de agosto, 23 de octubre, y 18 de noviembre a cada curso, 6º- 8º grado respectivamente.

    El programa será facilitado por los trabajadores sociales y consejeros académicos que involucrarán a los alumnos mostrándoles el vídeo de SOS y dirigiéndolos en una discusión sobre cómo implementar el mensaje principal de reconocer, preocuparse y contar (Acknowledge, Care, and Tell - ACT). Después de la discusión, los alumnos completarán un breve cuestionario sobre la depresión, así como una tarjeta de respuesta que les permite indicar si les gustaría hablar con un adulto sobre ellos mismos o un amigo.

    El cuestionario sobre la depresión aborda pensamientos y sentimientos que un alumno puede estar experimentando que pueden no ser evidentes para los padres o profesores. El cuestionario no proporciona un diagnóstico de depresión, sino que alerta al personal de la escuela sobre alumnos que necesiten una investigación más profunda. El personal de servicios estudiantiles (trabajadores sociales, psicólogo escolar o consejero académico) o un socio de salud mental comunitario cualificado se reunirán con aquellos alumnos cuyo cuestionario indique una necesidad. Los padres/tutores serán avisados si vemos que su hijo puede necesitarlo y se proporcionarán los pasos necesarios, que pueden incluir una recomendación a un especialista de la comunidad, el desarrollo de un plan de apoyo escolar, y/o el desarrollo de un plan de seguimiento del progreso con el personal de los servicios estudiantiles.

    Puede encontrar información adicional sobre La misión de Elyssa, el programa de señales de suicidio y la prevención del suicidio (Elyssa’s Mission, The Signs of Suicide program and Suicide Prevention) visitando este enlace Asegúrese que visita parent page donde encontrará un vídeo que muestra las señales de alarma de suicidio y cómo mantener a su hijo a salvo.

    Si tiene alguna pregunta y/o NO quiere que su hijo participe en el programa SOS, por favor, póngase en contacto con Annette Herrera al número de teléfono (630) 420-6364, antes del día en el que presentaremos el programa. Si no se pone en contacto con nosotros, asumiremos que su hijo tiene permiso para participar en este programa.

  • NWEA Map Testing 8/20 & 8/21

    Posted by Malee Farmer on 8/20/2019

    MAP testing will begin tomorrow at Jefferson Junior High. MAP is a district benchmark assessment in reading and math. It is online so it is critical that all Chromebooks get charged tonight. Students will take the test first thing in the morning so it is important that all students arrive on time. If students can use a calculator for a question, it will be a tool the students can access within the app. Students do not need to bring a calculator unless is a testing accommodation they receive.

    We appreciate your partnership in preparing for this test. In preparation for any test, it helps students to get a good night’s rest and eating breakfast.

    If a student misses the test, the counselors will proctor make up testing afterwards.

    Additional information concerning this assessment is available via the NWEA Parent Toolkit. Student Resources allows one to preview additional information regarding the purpose, delivery, tools and interface of this assessment.

    Thank you,
    Malee Farmer

Strategic Blueprint

  • District 203’s FOCUS 2020 Strategic Blueprint

    Posted by Superintendent Dan Bridges on 6/27/2014
    FOCUS 2020 is the strategic plan for comprehensive improvement between 2014 and 2020, designed in response to community feedback, best practice, and a vision for the future. Ultimately, this blueprint will advance the fulfillment of the district’s mission.
    FOCUS 2020’s foundation is the Future Focus Community Engagement process that occurred over the course of a year where hundreds of members from across the community provided feedback to the district leadership regarding areas such as facilities, finances, measuring student success, and programs of study. Learn more about Future Focus by clicking on the specific “Quick Link” to the left of this text.
    The Blueprint includes four “Strategic Focus” areas, namely to:
    1. Design and implement effective practices that promote learning experiences for all.
    2. Foster a high-performance culture focused on student learning.
    3. Steward resources effectively to promote student learning.
    4. Effective communication and community relations.
    Each Strategic Focus then establishes “Commitments.” These commitments are what the district leadership pledges to accomplish within a distinct timeframe. Each commitment then includes a detailed “Action Plan” which will be accessible by the public upon final draft.
    District administrators provided an update on Blueprint Commitments to the Board of Education at the July 27, 2015 meeting.  To watch that presentation, please click here
