Naperville Heritage Society has developed a 25-year plan with an eye toward sustainability and environmental considerations, in addition to positioning the museum as Chicagoland's outdoor history museum. NHS’ goals are to tell experiential, engaging and compelling stories, provide relevancy to today and connect with the downtown and the community in a broader sense. One way to connect with the community in a broader sense is to invite Naperville 203 students in to help design a new exhibit space for the nearly 66,000 historical artifacts housed by the Naperville Heritage Society. The Naperville 203 high schools' architectural classes will engage in 'real-life learning experiences’ by partnering with the Museum leadership team. The projects usually kick off with a meeting with students and mentors in December with the classes for the Jan-June term. This specific project also involved a site visit to the warehouse storing the artifacts to give students a sense of Naperville's history, the size and scope of various themed items, and the importance of maintaining humidity and temperature controlled spaces. Additional considerations included how to transport and deliver artifacts between storage and exhibit spaces. The Settlement board of trustees and staff were seeking student ideas about design as well - Should the new building have a modern or historic look? Why?
