Letter from Katie Matthews, Asst. Superintendent for Elementary Schools

  • Dear Elementary Families,

As a follow-up to the recent district communication, I would like to share details about proposed changes to the elementary school schedule and structure. These updates are a result of the collaboration and input of representatives from the elementary staff and are designed to create a more consistent and supportive learning environment for all elementary students while setting the stage for high-quality instruction and future innovation.

    Key Changes

WIN (What I Need) Time for Student Support and Extension:
We are implementing a dedicated WIN block, providing time for students to engage in individualized interventions and enrichment opportunities. This change ensures that all students, regardless of their academic level, receive the targeted support or challenges they need to thrive. WIN will be scheduled four days a week across all classrooms and schools.

Daily Morning Meetings and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL):
Every classroom will begin the day with a morning meeting, fostering a sense of community and connection. Additionally, weekly SEL instruction will build essential life skills such as empathy, problem-solving, and collaboration. These practices align with our district’s learner profile and ensure that students feel supported socially and emotionally.

    Maximizing Instructional Time:
The proposed schedule has been thoughtfully designed to balance instructional time with necessary breaks like recess and transitions. For example, core subjects (reading, math, science, and social studies) and special classes (art, music, library, and P.E.) will be prioritized, while still allowing time for movement and social interactions.

Extending the School Day by 15 Minutes:
To achieve these goals, we are proposing to extend the school day by 15 minutes. This additional time allows for WIN, daily morning meetings, and protected instructional time without compromising breaks or recess.

    Collaboration and Planning for Teachers:
We are also working to standardize planning and collaboration time for teachers across all schools. This consistency will enable teachers to share best practices, engage in meaningful discussions, and create cohesive instructional plans that benefit every student.

    Why These Changes Matter

These updates aim to create a more consistent and intentional learning environment across all elementary schools. By incorporating WIN, focusing on SEL, maximizing instructional time, and fostering teacher collaboration, we can better support every aspect of your child’s development.
