This simple and quick 5-finger breathing technique is a great one to help you stay healthy and keep calm in stressful situations.

Begin with your hands up, parallel to one another (about 3-6 inches apart), fingers spread wide, and palms facing each other.

Take one deep breath in and on the exhale put your thumbs together.  Keeping your thumbs together, take another deep breath, and on the exhale put your pointer fingers together.  Continue this for three more breaths, putting your middle fingers, ring fingers, and pinky fingers together consecutively.  Once you have completed the five breaths, all five fingers should be touching.

This is a great technique to do several times a day, consistently each and every day.  It gives you a break in your hectic life, allowing you the opportunity to relieve a little stress with five simple breaths.

What is also beneficial about it is that once you do this consistently your brain begins to associate your fingers being together in that position with your body being relaxed.  So the next time you are about to enter a stressful situation, all you will need to do is place your fingers together to calm yourself down.

Ron Ory Community Garden Plots: Benefits of Gardening

  • NPD

Getting exercise and staying fit doesn't have to involve a traditional workout. With spring on the horizon, did you know that there are many benefits to gardening? Not only does being outdoors enjoying the sun and fresh air help improve your mood, but the act of gardening itself provides a full body workout while helping lower stress hormones. Gardening also is a great social activity that promotes making connections in the community. Plus, gardening also helps birds, insects and wildlife and helps pollinators do their important jobs.

#ShareYourLightD203

Elementary students from kindergarten to fifth-grade across the district studied the artist, Marjolein Bastin, who spreads joy through her nature drawings. Her artwork can be seen on many Hallmark cards that help people to spread cheer and happiness. The elementary students drew a light bulb full of things that brighten their days and bring them joy. They then choose to share their light with the rest of the district by posting their artwork publicly.

Give back to help others – and yourself!

There is always something you can do to help others. A random act of kindness, volunteering, giving a compliment, donating to a cause you care about, teaching someone something new. When you give back, you not only help your friends, neighbors, community or cause, but you also help yourself.  Giving back makes you happier and healthier, reducing stress, and boosting your mood. Try it today! Compliment a friend, check on a neighbor, donate to your favorite cause, teach your child something new and see how it feels! Learn more about NEF and the opportunity to give back to Naperville 203 students by running or walking with TEAM NEF at www.nef203.org/teamnef
