Welcome to Kindergarten
Wow! The year is flying by! It is hard to believe there is only a third of the school year left. During the second trimester, kindergartners started Readers Workshop with learning about fiction texts, realistic and fantasy. We spent time practicing retelling stories and learning text signals. We compared texts and looked for similarities and differences. In January, our focus switched to nonfiction. We will continue learning about text features and the different ways nonfiction books can teach us in the third trimester.
In Writers Workshop, we focused on narratives and making sure there was a beginning, middle and end to each story. Children used text features and connecting words to help make their stories more interesting. In January, we started writing how to books. We will continue focus on making sure our writing is clear and we provide details to help the reader follow the steps.
Our Science Unit, Pushes and Pulls, was a blast! It was so fun learning about roller coasters and identifying when there is a push and when there is a pull. We experimented with different pushes and pulls in the classroom, even bowling and setting up dominoes.
In Math, we continue to focus on fluently adding and subtracting within 5. We are developing a strong number sense in kindergarten by using daily number talks and providing hands on activities. Everyone had a blast on the 100th day!
During weekly Second Step lessons and daily morning meetings, we practiced how to respond if there is an accident. We also focused on having empathy. Children practiced how to use the calming strategies when you feel a strong emotion.
In Trimester 3, we are looking forward to learning about Poetry, writing opinion pieces, learning about animal and plant relationships in Science, studying Mexico and fluently adding and subtracting within 10.
