Is Kennedy a Junior High School or Middle School?
Posted by:Kennedy Junior High School has a name which might indicate a method of delivering instruction that is attached to departmentalization. This is not the case, however. Kennedy is an Illinois State Model Middle School aptly named by the Illinois Association of Middle Schools. We are indeed a middle school with a Junior High School name. -
What is the difference between Junior High School and Middle School?
Posted by:The difference between Junior High School and Middle School is teaming. In a Junior High School, there are no teams. Departments, i.e. the math department, deliver math instruction to all students who take math. In a middle school or teaming approach approximately 120 students are placed on a team with 4-5 teachers who get to know their students very well. These 4-5 teachers deliver all the instruction to their 120 or so students. The middle school is modeled after Oxford and other great universities which have smaller colleges within the large university. So, a middle school has small teams within the larger school. -
How do I register my child for KJHS
Posted by:A registration packet is sent to each student's home in July. This packet contains all paperwork necessary to register your child. You will also receive information on the many volunteer opportunities available at KJHS. A KJHS calendar including District 203 policies and information specific to KJHS, including a faculty listing, sports schedules, extracurricular activities, rules, and regulations, will be distributed on the first day of school to every Kennedy student. -
What is a "TEAM"?
Posted by:A team is a group of approximately 150 students who are assigned to the same group of core teachers, who provide smaller learning groups at each grade level. Each team is comprised of four or five teachers who are assigned the responsibility of educating 150 students in the areas of language arts, math, science, and social studies. -
What is "Supervised Study"?
Posted by:Supervised study is a daily class period where your child will be assigned to one of their core academic teachers. During this period, your child may begin working on any assignment they choose. We encourage students to select their most challenging work at this time because all of their academic teachers are available if they need reinforcement, assistance, or a re-explanation. Our performing musical groups also use this time to rehearse. -
Can my child switch teams?
Posted by:No. Our philosophy is that we would rather work through problems, than avoid them. Problem solving is a key life skill, which we encourage at every possible teachable moment. -
What is an "Exploratory"?
Posted by:Incoming 6th graders are asked to pick 3 out of the 4 exploratory classes prior to school starting.
Exploratory classes available for 6th grade to choose from include Art, General Music, Project Lead the Way (PLTW), and Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS).
In the spring, 6th graders will register either for the Exploratory Rotation (Art, PLTW, FACS) or World Languages for 7th grade. Since World Languages is a 2-year program, whatever the student picks will be for 7th & 8th grade.

How do Band, Chorus, or Orchestra fit into my student's schedule?
Posted by:These classes meet during the supervised study period, thus resulting in no supervised study on the days that these groups meet. These performance groups are graded classes and are included on trimester report cards.
Band and orchestra students have weekly small-group rehearsals, which are rotated throughout the school day so that students only miss a given class approximately once every six weeks.
-
Can my child drop a class after the year has begun?
Posted by:Band, Chorus, and Orchestra are courses that require a yearlong commitment by students. These courses may be dropped through the Friday following Labor Day upon written request by parents. Such requests should be made to the group director. -
What is a student ID card?
Posted by:Every student receives an ID card with their picture and a number assigned to them. The number assigned will be their number throughout middle school and high school. What is the purpose of a locker shelf and does my child need one?
Posted by:For the existing 6th and 7th graders, the order form will be distributed from their homeroom teacher, or on the KJHS website. For incoming 6th graders, the order form will be available in their orientation packet or on the KJHS website. It is highly recommended that each student purchase a locker shelf. The lockers are very small and have no shelves. Purchasing a shelf will help to organize a student's locker area. Students may not use masking tape or stickers on their lockers. Magnets should be used to adhere things to the locker itself. -
Does Kennedy offer spirit wear for sale? When and where?
Posted by:The Kennedy Junior High Home and School Association offers spirit wear for sale several times during the year. Representatives from the Spirit wear committee will visit the school so that students and parents are allowed to see the items offered for sale and to determine the correct sizing. -
Do the different TEAMS offer TEAM t-shirts?
Posted by:Generally each team creates a TEAM t-shirt with a motto and logo that can be purchased by the students at an optional extra charge. These shirts can be worn by the students on field trips, pod days and whenever your student chooses to build up TEAM spirit. -
Does Kennedy hold a "moving on" ceremony for eighth graders?
Posted by:Yes. In order for a student to earn the privilege of attending the "Moving On" ceremony at the end of eighth grade, he/she must earn passing grades in half of the subjects in which he/she is enrolled. This will be monitored up to and including the third trimester mid-term report. Any student failing half, or more, of their subjects will be placed on academic probation, during which the student and their counselor will design an academic plan for improvement. Failure to meet the conditions of probation may result in the student's exclusion from the "Moving On" ceremony.
This ceremony takes place during the school day at the end of the school year. Each family receives just two tickets as space is tight. Lots of volunteers are required to make this a memorable event. Information, and requests for volunteers, begins coming home to parents in January/February.
