Trimester 2 News

It is my hope that you finally thawed out after our recent Polar Vortex.  Let’s hope that moving forward, we see temperatures rising as we anticipate the arrival of spring and, of course, baseball season (Go Cubs!). Believe it or not, we are over half-way through the 2018-19 school year and heading into our third trimester.

The second trimester saw students continuing to build their independence, work collaboratively, engage in classroom discussions, enhance learning through technology, and continue to build their SEL skills. The staff and I are confident they will continue to work just as hard and end the year on a positive note!  To support our students, Prairie staff continues to carefully review data to support instructional planning as well as to ensure that students’ needs are being met in the classroom.

While it seems second trimester came and went in the blink of an eye, we had a lot going on at Prairie, including the start of this year’s Community Reads.  Our book selection, The Sasquatch Escape, was enjoyed by many.   At our evening event, we even discovered a six foot Sasquatch that decided to make Prairie its home.   It turns out he was quite friendly and had a thing for chocolate!  Special thanks go out to SFCP for bringing such a fun event to Prairie.  Speaking of fun, our Home and School hosted movie night.  Prairie families enjoyed a showing of Incredibles 2.  It was a fun night of pizza, snacks, and of course, a great movie.  Thank you Home and School for all you do!

Another great event was held in January at the Naperville Municipal Center.  Several Prairie students showed off some of their incredible artwork.  Our 3rd Grade ImpactART! club also previewed their Buddy Bench video. Mrs. Anderson and I felt such pride as we watched students show off their work to parents and other family members in attendance.  Our 4th and 5th grade choir is back at work again too.  This time they are preparing for a performance at an upcoming Chicago Wolves game.  There is so much creativity and talent at Prairie!

New to Prairie in January was the second grade Fact Fluency Club pilot program.   These mathematicians come to school early two days a week to sharpen their math skills in a fun and interactive way.  It is our hope to expand this pilot to support more students next year.   I am also thrilled to announce that we will be hosting a Spring Run Club.  While we are in the early stages of planning, we are looking forward to offering this wonderful opportunity to our students.

Spring also brings the opportunity for students to demonstrate their growth and achievement via state and district testing. This year, students in grades 3-5 will take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) in place of the PARCC exam of years past. The window for this exam spans the first two weeks of April. Students in grades 2-5 will also have one last round of the Performance Series test in May. More specific dates for these assessments will be coming soon via the WAAG and backpack mail. We appreciate your support in making sure students get a good night’s sleep and have a healthy breakfast during those testing sessions.

The staff and I are looking forward to a wonderful third trimester.  Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
