November/December 2018

It is hard to believe that we are done with Trimester One and are officially into the holiday season.   As I sit at my desk on our first (and hopefully last) snow day of the season, I am filled with great pride at all that we have accomplished in these first 12 weeks of school.  Our students continue to enter the building day after day full of enthusiasm, joy, and an eagerness to learn and to accomplish new things.  The staff and I are so proud of their growth both academically and social-emotionally and we know this is just the beginning!

So, what else have we accomplished this trimester?  We kicked off Garden Club, 4th/5th chorus and before school sports.  We honored our Veterans, started up our Watch D.O.G.S. program as well as 3rd Grade Impact Art, and introduced a new club at Prairie called The Ripple Effect.  We welcomed three authors, started a Mindful Monday whole school morning activity, celebrated Prairie’s 50th Anniversary by taking a whole school aerial picture, and had a costume parade to celebrate the arrival of fall.   Students even had opportunities to expand their learning beyond Prairie’s walls as they visited Naper Settlement, Johannsen’s Pumpkin Farm, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Morton Arboretum, the Lyric Opera and Camp Manitoqua.

Our parent organizations, Home and School and SFCP, were busy as well with our Fall Social, Mindfulness Parent Presentation, spirit wear orders, yearbook photos, staff recognition, and so much more.

We have also been busy on the staff front.  I am pleased to announce a new addition to the Prairie staff.  I am thrilled to introduce Mr. Michael Gulczynski as our new head custodian.  Michael comes to us from Ranch View Elementary School and is excited to be joining our learning community in this new role.  I know you will find him approachable, warm and student-centered.  He is already proving himself a wonderful addition to our staff.  Please extend a warm welcome to him when you see him out crossing students in the morning or around the building.

As some of you know, my family and I are huge Disney fans.  There is a quotation attributed to Walt Disney that says, “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” As we move into second trimester, I am excited about the paths that we will take as a school community in opening new doors and doing new things to benefit our students and foster their growth both academically and social-emotionally.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and a very happy 2019.
