Washington Junior High School is using February to “Show the Love” - a month-long theme that is weaving kindness, positivity and love into the school community and beyond. In conjunction with school administration and staff, the Service Matters, Student Council, and the The Ripple Effect clubs have played a role in spreading this message inside and outside the school community.
Starting with an all-school kick-off, students had the opportunity to get to know each other better and find out how they could support the campaign through fun outreach efforts all month. Highlights of this initiative have included:
Staff and the Service Matters Club raised over $900 through “Cups for a Cause” to support the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) with a “Cups for a Cause” event. Through this fundraiser, staff members purchased donated Sparrow Coffee, raffle tickets for a Sparrow Coffee gift basket, and donated money of their own to the cause. WJHS students were able to participate in the fundraiser by purchasing hot chocolate with marshmallows during their lunch periods.
WJHS students also spread this important message outside of the school community by making blankets as part of Project Linus to benefit Lurie Children’s Hospital. Students also decorated lunch bags for HESED House to show love and kind messages to those in need.
This inspiring all-school effort has also spread to social media through a hashtag to reiterate the theme - #WJHSShowtheLove!
