My name is Melodee Barnes. I am the proud wife of a Jeopardy! alum and the mother of two wonderful children. I have taught young learners for 18 years. While raising my family I attended school part-time at Governors State University. One of my proudest moments was when I received my Early Childhood Education Degree in 2010. After earning my degree, I taught kindergarten for three years. Teaching kindergarten was an enriching experience, but young children have always had my heart. My goal is to make school so exciting that your child wants to be here on the weekends! I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to teach young children during my first year here at Ann Reid Early Childhood Center.
Before coming to Ann Reid, I was fortunate to be able to spend a handful of years at home with my own young children. My husband and I have four daughters, all of whom attend District 203 schools. Before being at home with my children, I taught Early Childhood Special Education, Kindergarten, Second Grade, and K-3 Reading in Urbana, Winnetka, Aurora, and Naperville, IL and Plano, TX. I received a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education from the University of Illinois. I recently completed coursework at National Lewis University and obtained my English Language Learner endorsement. In my rare free time I enjoy reading, walking, learning how to knit, and spending time with my busy family.
I grew up in Aurora, IL and attended college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2009. During my undergraduate years, I spent several summers working as a teaching assistant in District 203’s Extended School Year summer program for students with special needs. This experience inspired me to pursue a career in teaching. In 2011, I received my master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education as well as my Illinois Teaching Certification from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Last year, I also earned my certification for teaching English Language Learners from National Louis University. I currently live in Chicago with my fiancé. In my free time, I am enjoying making plans for my upcoming wedding in June 2015. I also love exploring all there is to do in Chicago, crafting, reading, and spending time outdoors.
