Bus Idling Policy

Bus Idling Policy

District 203 is complying with the 2003 Clean School Bus Act. We are following the EPA guidelines to clean up the diesel pollutants in the air.

At the school idling times:

The transportation department and the district have directed the drivers to turn off their buses at the schools while loading and unloading students. However, when there are extenuating circumstances such as inclement weather like ice, sleet or snow, we are asking the schools to allow us to run our buses for at least five minutes before school lets out in the afternoon or longer if necessary. The drivers will use their best judgment during days that may have extenuating circumstances. In this scenario, safety should supercede air quality. The windows and mirrors need to be kept clean for visibility purposes. This does not apply to special education buses that transport medically fragile students. These buses must have adequate heating and cooling at all times.
