• You may have noticed the two book boxes mounted on posts in the front of the school. They are actually lending libraries, called Little Free Libraries, for books. In honor of Mrs. Fosse and Mrs. Sikula, former teachers at Scott Elementary School, a donation of two Little Free Libraries has been made to our school by the Scott Home & School.

Little Free Libraries are a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. Each Little Free Library is registered and has a special number. In 2009, Todd Bol of Wisconsin built a model of a one room schoolhouse as a tribute to his mother, a former school teacher who loved reading. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard. His neighbors and friends loved it, and his efforts started the Little Free Library movement. The mission of Little Free Libraries is to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations. More information is available on the Little Free Library website at http://littlefreelibrary.org/.

Staff, students and parents wanted to honor these two teachers. Scott School staff members researched Little Free Libraries and presented the information to our Home and School. The pre-made libraries were purchased and arrived in the summer. They were assembled, painted, and finished by Mr. Micensky, our principal, Mr. Garrison, a retired teacher, and Mr. Ramos, one of our custodians. The libraries were placed in the front of the school. Here are some suggestions for using the Little Free Libraries at Scott School:

    • Stop by with your family and look at the books. Take a book that interests you.
    • If possible, bring a book in good condition to share. Be sure it is not a book checked out from our library, the classroom, or a public library.
    • If you take a book, please share it in some way after you have finished reading the book. You could return the book to the Little Free Libraries at Scott or another Little Free Library. You could lend it to a friend or neighbor. You could donate the book to another charity. There are many ways to share!
    • For safety reasons, the Little Free Libraries are closed during arrival and dismissal time.

Scott School is grateful to honor Mrs. Fosse and Mrs. Sikula and appreciates the support of our Home & School. Thank you for your efforts to promote literacy and the love of reading with your family. Enjoy the Little Free Libraries!
