Join us Thursday Morning for Future Focus 203: Financing Student Success
Please join us on Thursday morning, June 13, for this session on financing education in D203. For those unable to attend, the session will be broadcast on NCTV17 and available on this web site. However, your participation in the discussion is a crucial component and we hope to see you at Grace United Methodist at 8:30 am!
The fourth Future Focus 203 community engagement session will take a look at how funding supports student education. Community members will be asked to look at the financial resources of the District and how they can best be applied to make a meaningful impact on student success.
The question for this session is: “Does District 203 have the capacity and resources to prepare our students for success?” Based on an understanding of the financial capacity of the District, community members will be asked how they would prioritize program changes for short and long term student success taking into consideration the financial resources of the District.
Some specifics that will be covered in the June session include: District sources of revenue and financial health, how local revenue is generated and the impacts on the local taxpayer, how declines in property valuations (EAV) and student enrollment impact financial needs, and the financial resources the District uses to support program growth. This topic is significant because it affects every household within the District’s boundaries.
Future Focus 203 Session 4 will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 7-9 pm at Naperville Central High School and again on Thursday, June 13, 8:30-10:30 am at Grace United Methodist Church. RSVPs are requested in helping plan the session, but NOT required. Call 630-548-4342 or email futurefocus@naperville203.org. Community feedback can also be submitted via email at futurefocus@naperville203.org or on Facebook by “liking” www.facebook.com/FutureFocus203. This evening’s Future Focus 203 session scheduled for 7:00 pm at Naperville Central High School has been CANCELLED. While Future Focus 203 is planning an important discussion about financing education, the safety of our residents takes immediate priority. The City of Naperville released the following information earlier today:
With potentially significant severe weather anticipated throughout the entire Chicago area this evening, residents are encouraged to prepare ahead of time and make sure they have a way to receive weather warnings.
Currently, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect for Naperville from 4 p.m. this afternoon through late tonight. During and immediately prior to severe weather incidents, residents should tune in to their preferred local media outlet, NOAA Weather Radio and the National Weather Service website at www.crh.noaa.gov/lot/ for the latest weather updates.

Board of Education ratifies new three-year teacher contract
The Naperville Board of Education and Naperville Unit Education Association (NUEA) have agreed to a three-year contract that emphasizes the importance of career development.
On Wednesday, May 22, 2013, the Naperville 203 Board of Education voted 7-0 to approve a new teachers’ union contract noting the Naperville Unit Education Association’s (NUEA) commitment to a professional development model that places emphasis on improving education for all students.
For the three past years, administrators and educators have been working together to develop a program called Career 203 that furthers sustainable, meaningful professional development opportunities. The goal of Career 203 is to create high-quality professional development options that will allow educators to originate individualized, unique career paths that support positive student growth.
The three-year NUEA contract has an average cost to taxpayers of less than 2% annually. While the teacher year-to-year increase averages less than 3.5% annually, with deductions in other union payroll expenses the final cost to the taxpayer is 1.89%. Read more here.

Future Focus 203 Starts this Week!
In these first sessions, the opening topic will be the “State of the District.” This overview will touch on the topics that have an impact on education in our District. Immediately following, community members will work in small groups to discuss what they heard and provide a consensus decision on what are the driving topics that should be the focus of future engagement sessions.
It’s not too late to join us for the first Future Focus 203 session!
Wednesday Evening at Naperville Central High School
Session runs from 7:00 – 9:00 pm
Please plan to arrive early so we can start promptly at 7:00 pm. The best access to the NCHS Large Cafeteria is through Door #8 on the east side of the school. Parking will be available in the back lot, accessible off of Hillside Road. Doors #1 and #9 will also be open. If you enter from either of these two doors, signs will direct you to the Cafeteria.
As these are working sessions, food and drink will NOT be served.
Your comments will be gathered and the feedback received along with a copy of the “State of the District” report will be placed on the District web site as soon as the information is compiled. NCTV17 will be present at each session to gather footage of the process and interview community members on their thoughts about education. NCTV17 will broadcast the “State of the District” address at a date to be announced.

Participate in Future Focus 203
Iniciativa de Participación Comunitaria
Our school district is launching an extensive community engagement initiative called Future Focus 203. Through a series of discussion-based sessions, the community is being asked to provide input that will inform the immediate, intermediate and long-term direction of the school district. We believe this initiative is so important that we have volunteered to serve as Community Co-chairs.
Future Focus 203 will consist of a series of five sessions with different topics each month. The first two dates are Tuesday, March 12, 8:30-10:30 AM, and Wednesday, March 13, 7:00-9:00 PM. At our first session in March, the current “State of the District” will be the focus. This is where you will begin to help shape the direction of the District. You will be asked to provide input regarding key issues you think need to be addressed in the subsequent engagement sessions.
It is vitally important for all of us to attend and contribute. Only with diverse and informed voices can an effective plan for our District be developed.
What YOU say at these sessions and contribute through discussion will MAKE A DIFFERENCE. This is NOT just for families with children, but for a COMMUNITY that values children and their education.
Mark Trembacki and Kathy Ruiz
Community Co-chairs
