Response to Connecticut Tragedy

12/14/2012  We extend our sympathy to the families and community in Newtown, Connecticut for the tragic loss they are feeling and the fear that comes from such a senseless act. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the teachers, staff and administrators of the school who place the safety of their students above their own needs. We know all too well the pain a school and a community feels when violence take the lives of those we care about, especially children.

Your child may become aware of this latest tragedy and have questions, concerns or fears. Some resources you may find beneficial can be found here: Tips and Guidelines for speaking with children about traumatic events.  Please share with your student’s teachers anything they may need to know to be able to assist your child, and remember our school counselors are always available to you or your student.

Each year our schools practice lockdown drills and response plans should an event that requires the immediate response of students and staff occur. Procedure reviews and practice drills are done in collaboration with our local law enforcement, including our School Resource Officers who are in our schools daily. If you are unfamiliar with what types of safety measures are in place at your school, please talk to your student’s teacher or school administrators.

When a lockdown is issued, parents are notified through the use of the District TALK203 communications system. It is important to keep your contact information up-to-date in Infinite Campus in order to receive these messages, which come in the form of an email, voicemail and text message.

While we all know it is not possible to prevent senseless acts such as this from happening, by being prepared and working together in partnership, we can help insure the safety of our children.
