Elementary Enrichment

Grades K-5

The philosophy of elementary enrichment for Naperville School District 203 is to provide appropriate differentiated learning opportunities for those K-5 students who display attributes associated with academic talent in all or one of the fundamental learning areas.

Elementary enrichment provides opportunities for students to probe deeper into the content of the curriculum, experience different processes for learning and create products to demonstrate their learning. Classroom teachers create and plan enrichment lessons related to grade level curriculum, goals and objectives. Through flexible grouping, teachers match extension and enrichment activities to students’ needs in the content areas of reading, math, science and social science.

Classroom teachers determine which students participate in enrichment activities. A combination of classroom observations and ongoing assessments are used to identify children who acquire curriculum objectives quickly and would benefit from additional challenges in a content area.

Enrichment opportunities may be provided by the classroom teacher in the classroom or in a small group setting with the building enrichment assistant. An enrichment assistant is available in each of the 14 elementary buildings to support the delivery of the enrichment opportunities.

Teacher observation and assessment of students is ongoing throughout the elementary years.  Student participation in enrichment activities is fluid.  The objective of student participation in enrichment is to provide differentiated instruction for the students whose needs would be best served at the time.
