Month of Peace

The City of Naperville has proclaimed October 15 through November 15, 2009, as a month-long Celebration of Peace. District 203 and District 204, in partnership with ThinkGlobal Arts Foundation, are participating in this special event.

This year's events include keynote speaker Alex Counts, president and CEO of the Grameen Foundation, a dynamic organization focusing on enabling the poor to create a world without poverty, utilizing the tools of microfinance and technology.

The celebration features a variety of events and activities designed to provoke thought, encourage dialog and strengthen understanding about issues around diversity, the environment and current global events.

Creative Stamp Design

Hosted by ThinkGlobal Arts Foundation, this stamp design contest is open to elementary through high school students at all Naperville area schools. Students are invited to create works of art with the theme of "Imagine Peace."

The winning artwork will be turned into real U.S. postage stamps. Entries must be submitted to school art teachers by October 26, 2009.

Poster Contest

In addition, a Peace Poster Contest will be sponsored by the Naperville Lions Club for students in grades 6-8. Winners will advance to the Lions Club International Poster Contest. These entries are also due by October 26 and have as a theme "the Power of Peace."

Essay/Poem for Peace Contest

An Essay/Poem for Peace writing contest is also being offered to all students, elementary through high school grade levels, in Naperville area public, private and home schools. Entries must be submitted by October 26, 2009.

All artwork and writing entries will be judged on originality, literary merit, and expression of the theme. A panel of five local judges with extensive experience in the areas of literature, media, education, communication and diversity awareness will select the winners. Winners will be announced at a press conference scheduled for Friday, November 13, 2009, beginning at 7 PM at the Naperville Municipal Center.
