Born To Read
"Few children learn to love books by themselves. Someone has to lure them into the wonderful world of the written word; someone has to show them the way.”
Orville Prescott, author
Father Reads to His Children
Mission Statement: To educate parents and caregivers of infants about the importance of reading aloud to children
through partnering with community groups in the distribution of information promoting the lifelong benefits of reading.
The Born To Read project is a collective partnership of community and governmental organizations working toward enhancing the lives of our youngest citizens and their families. The program was launched in 1997 by District 203 teachers, led by Judy Rubenstein and Wendy Haidinyak, with seed money from the Jeanine Nicarico Memorial Fund for Literacy. The goal of the Born To Read program is to provide new parents with the tools they need to begin to read aloud to their children from the earliest age possible, for the benefit of each child’s future reading.
In order to provide a positive early reading experience, Born To Read distributes bags of books and materials to infants through pediatricians and community organizations. Bags, in English or Spanish, include the following information and books.
- Read Aloud Handbook for Parents by Jim Trelease
- Born To Read information pamphlet
- Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
- Chicka Chicka ABC by Bill Martin and John Archambault
- Born To Read Survey
- Invitation for Naperville residents to visit the Naperville Public Library and apply for baby’s first library card
- Certificate for My Very First Mother Goose Board Book, received upon completion of survey
- Certificate for Anderson’s Bookshop’s Membership, received upon return of completed survey
